What is Ju-Jitsu?
Jujitsu is Japanese for gentle art. This refers to the principle of Jujitsu techniques that force is not directly opposed but given way to and redirected. Jujitsu goes back thousand of years. It has continually developed and added new techniques so that, in comparison, other martial arts are relatively restricted as they tend to concentrate on strikes (Karate, Taekwondo) or single weapons (Kendo). As a result the history of Jujitsu is not neat and tidy. Martial arts are recorded in China as long ago as 2700 BC and Jujitsu itself was first mentioned about 500 BC. Little is known of how it evolved over the next 2000 years but it is known that it was developed and taught at monasteries in China and then exported to Japan with Buddhist missionaries. In Japan the techniques of unarmed combat were combined with weapons techniques by the samurai (meaning servant but Japanese equivalent to the medieval knights in that they served a lord).
